The data at http://caro-coops.org/storm_surge_data/bathy/, specifically at http://caro-coops.org/storm_surge_data/bathy/scnc_topbat.cdf, is available. This data was manually converted from ASCII to netCDF, and is evidently not optimized (see quote).
| Quote: | Hi Charlton,
After contacting your outfit, I did some testing on the data set scnc_topbat.cdf at http://caro-coops.org/cgi-bin/nph-dods/storm_surge_data/bathy/
I had no problems with the axes defined. Shall I wait to use this until after your DODS directories are "cleaned up" and you have created your new data set?
If so, I wish that you would take a look at the dataset as presented through our LAS once before it is removed. Feel free to ask any questions concerning DODS, LAS, Ferret. I may or may not have the answers.

I have a little confessing to do before I dive right in w/ LAS and our datasets. We’re still a little wet behind the ears.
The data that you’re accessing was part of our maiden voyage into the world of data conversion, and I’m not surprised that you’re surprised by data flubs and inconsistencies. The coops_bathy dataset was primarily a proof-of-concept milestone, but that certainly doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t have gotten it right! So in that vain, I might bounce a question or two off of you in the near future since we’re trying to create our own new topo/bathy dataset for the Carolinas coast, compiled from different sources (naturally).
I’m rallying my troops to begin hosting some of these newly merged datasets, and although our initial intent was to have LAS as an iterative interface to our data, we’re regrouping and laying the groundwork for a MapServer gui. I would, however, like to clean up what we currently have available in terms of LAS and DODS datasets. As a matter of fact, DODS is still part of the equation since our datasets (netCDF) will eventually be available via DODS as well as via MapServer ad-hoc queries.
So, the Cliff’s Notes reply to your email is: Great to hear from you, Joe. You happened to hit on our very first attempts to brand ourselves as GIS wizards, and, unfortunately, we didn’t hit our mark. But we’ve got our eyes on bigger fish around the corner whose data will be made available soon and in the formats that seem of interest to you. And w/ that in mind, I’d like to clean up what we have, perhaps fire a question or two your way, and then take it from there.
Sound good?
Charlton

Hi David,
Thank you for the quick response. Some background. I am part of the LAS
development team, and also the administrator of the NVODS LAS (my duty
includes serving as many DODS datasets as possible). In looking at the
DODS served data at
http://caro-coops.org/cgi-bin/nph-dods/storm_surge_data/bathy/coops_bathy.nc.html
The longitude and latitude axes are irredular and contain repeating
values. I am able to write a custom initializatin script which redefines
the axes with regular timesteps, but I don't want to misrepresent the
data. Could you tell me how you configured the data xml file for LAS?
Thank you,
Joe

Hi, Joe:
Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you. Yes, getting the new server up and running has kept me busy, but now I'm back in the saddle again.
My short term goals included revisiting this dataset and cleaning it up. I also played around w/ the LAS interface by replacing the default applet map w/ a jpg I generated using the data itself. I must admit that I didn't get the end result I was hoping to get. If you're interested you can see my plight here: http://caro-coops.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=68.
I'm not terribly interested in getting LAS up to snuff since we plan to go the MapServer route, but getting our data clean and friendly is definitely a priority.
Would you mind elaborating what red herrings you noticed in our data?
And you also mentioned LAS sites of your own. Am I correct? If so, please send me the URL(s).
Thanks,
Charlton |
