I've been experimenting some with the
Knoppix LiveCD? distribution which allows folks to test or demo a Debian based Linux distro with customized content on a USB thumbdrive. In theory, folks could test or learn the system using just a CD with a USB thumbdrive (say 128 MB size) and go for a full install if they like what they see.
The end goal would be towards more of a turnkey type system that you just drop a server(or server image onto the right kind of server), setup a few configuration files and forget.
I have worked through the details of mapping postgresql data files(pg_data directory) onto a Windows host hard drive while still running under a knoppix user. This would allow an initial minimal running setup where data files could grow on the host hard drive and not fill up the USB thumbdrive.
